Health Tips for Traders

As another week winds down and most Americans look forward to indulging in overeating and sitting dormant in front of the TV on Super Bowl Sunday, I thought it would be appropriate to review some simple health and exercise tips that I have learned over the years:
- Avoid processed foods as much as possible and watch your sodium intake (high sodium levels lead to high blood pressure, bloating, and many other health dangers)
- Read ingredients labels and avoid anything with the words “artificial flavors”, “monosodium glutamate”, or “aspartame” (causes headaches)
- Eat organic foods whenever possible and wash all fruits and vegetables (read more on this at nutrition.about.com)
- Cut out the caffeine – first of all it only gives a short term burst of energy which is followed by a draggy feeling particularly when seated and dormant. However, I will sometimes ingest caffeine before a workout.
- Cut out the alcohol and you will be amazed at how quickly the excess weight comes off (1-3 social drinks once a week is ok just don’t make excuses to let it become more often), nothing gets rid of a gut faster than cutting out the beer from ones diet (trust me on this one).
- Use natural energy boosters such as sweet potatoes and other complex carbohydrates. Avoid the blood sugar rollercoaster by leaving out the so called “blood sugar bombs” and caffeine.
- Get up at least once per hour to walk around and stretch, it is also crucial to drink plenty of water and avoid dehydration which can easily sneak up on caffeine and sodium laden individuals. Don’t sit so much!
- Go work out! I don’t care how tired you are or how bad your day was it is so important to lead an active life style – Excercise is one of the best stress relievers. You will feel better once you get the blood flowing, trust me!
- For those who travel a lot there are plenty of excercises that can be done in a hotel room using only your body weight – Here are some good examples: The Hotel Room Workout
